The Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar, meaning each month begins with a new moon and contains either 29 or 30 days. Twelve lunar months add up to approximately 354 days — about 11 days shorter than the 365-day Gregorian solar year. This gap, compounding year after year, means Ramadan moves backward through the Gregorian calendar by roughly 10–12 days annually, cycling through all four seasons over a period of about 33 years before returning to the same approximate Gregorian date.
This is why older generations may remember fasting Ramadan in winter (shorter days, cooler weather) while today's Ramadan falls in different months. The calendar doesn't drift randomly; it follows a completely predictable mathematical pattern based on the lunar cycle, which is why dates can be calculated years in advance even though the "official" start in any country still awaits the actual moon sighting.

Two systems exist side by side for determining the start of Ramadan. The calculated (tabular) approach uses mathematics — knowing the moon's orbital cycle precisely enough to predict when a new crescent will theoretically be visible. The observed approach requires an actual sighting of the new crescent moon by qualified witnesses on the ground. Weather, local horizon conditions, and geographical differences all mean that the crescent might be sighted in one country but not another on the same evening, resulting in different countries starting Ramadan on different days. Saudi Arabia's official sighting is watched closely internationally since it influences many Muslim communities globally, but Pakistan, Turkey, Indonesia, and others make their own independent moon-sighting decisions.
